At various pionts in our history there have been various forms of census taken of the population, mainly by owners of large estates. These where used to account for the persons holding propety as tenants , landowners and availabilty of males for military service. The greatest census of them all was the Doomsday Census which culminated in the Doomsday book, however no of these census gave the full names of persons in a household or their relationship the the head of the household.

It was not until eighteen forty one that a regular census was decided upon to be carried out at an interval of ten years. Although the 1841 census listed everyone in the property it did not give the relationship to the head or place born, the latter being shown as whether they were born in or out of the county where the census was taken. For this reason it has a limited use to the family historian.

From 1851 onwards more and more information was requested which makes them a much used aid in the tracing of our ancestors.
