Prior to civil registration of births, marriages and deaths, in September 1837 ,research has to be carried out using the various records kept in the parish that comprise the following pages.

Parish Registers, these where kept by the parish priest for recording the baptisms, marriages and deaths that took place in his parish. The keeping of these records became law in the 15oos but at times were not kept up to date, so gaps in the years recorded appear, this is notable during the time of the English Civil War in the 1600s. It also depended on the person keeping the records of how much information was entered. Along with the parish registers entries were sent monthly to the dioces office on slips of paper, to be included into the Bishops Transcripts, sometimes getting lost, so details are missing.

Overseers to the Poor Accounts, these give details of the monies spent by the parish for the upkeep of the poor, ie; payments to the workhouse for equipment and food, weekly payments to individuals, payment for rent, clothing and funerals.
